How can anyone enjoy history? That's what I used to think. Who cares who won the War of the Roses? Well It must be part of growing older, because it is becoming more and more interesting. I don't know what excuse young folks have for liking history, but for us old farts it is a matter of; there is more history in our lives, than there is future. Simple logic. At any rate, for you with inquisitive minds, this is our history. Read it and weep. (jeez, I hope not!) After the history section is a team roll sheet for all-time. I am hoping some of you are out there and read the web and will e-mail me so we can get an alumni group going. Someday I would like to have a banquet of all the old team members from 1973 to present.
History of Eric Will Gymnastics
We started out as a YMCA, The North Orange County YMCA. Located on Harbor Blvd. next to St. Jude Hospital. Eric Will took over as the boys coach in 1973. Scott Crouse had been the coach and now was assuming the head coach responsibilities at SCATS. After two years the coach for the Women's team at the YMCA resigned. Eric added on this responsibility as well. In another year He became the director of the class program. Eric was in charge of everything that was related to gymnastics including the moving of equipment. The program did well considering that equipment was set up and torn down daily. The gym was so small that the vaulting runway started outside of the gym near the front desk. As difficult as this was, the program was prospering and in a very comfortable status quo. This was to change when aerobics became the latest craze. The Y director was going to cut back into the gym time with aerobic classes. With a enormous amount of help from the parents club (Stalders Booster Club) the program was able to set up in a satellite facility. For two years the gym grew as an YMCA program. Then the YMCA changed personnel and the satellite program was abandoned. Eric negotiated the lease as his own gym program and managed to keep most of the class and team students.
